Hearts Need Guarding?!

Lately I've felt a need to steep myself a little more in what the Bible has to say in general. It's been a long time since I've wanted to open it on a daily basis and read, so this is a good feeling. Every morning when I wake up, I turn on my nook and start reading. Right now I am reading from Proverbs and I am loving it. The wisdom and the understanding gained in there is amazing... why haven't I been steeping myself in it all along?! It's so practical! The other day I was in Proverbs 4:23 and the verse was about guarding your heart. It's not something we think about doing really? I mean, we think about being heart healthy all the time or speaking about our emotions because that's what you do feel better etc. But to guard the heart?! What does it mean? The verse doesn't tell you exactly what it means or how to go about doing it, but it tells you to do it because your heart is the well-spring of life (true in both the physical and emotional sense, isn't it?!) So here is my quandary: What does it mean to guard your heart exactly? How do you go about doing it? And is it possible to step to far into guarding it? I'm keen to know what you think, please leave a comment on here.

  1. I LOVE Proverbs and thank you for inspiring me to start reading them again as well!! You guard your heart by loving Christ above all else. He will then lead your heart and protect it for you. That's what I think! :)

  2. I agree with the above post and believe that is an eloquent description of the Biblical intention of "guarding your heart." I think its important to distinguish between guarding your heart and building a wall around it. I feel that I did a better job of "guarding my heart" in my most recent relationship than I did with Kirk. From my perspective, guarding your heart entails wisdom as opposed to being "blind" or "naive." As I was reading a book (entitled On Caring) for class tonight I read a sentence that resonated with me and seems to capture the essence of what I see as the pragmatic or practical intention of "guarding your heart." My extrapolation then is that guarding your heart is "informed by insight from past experiences" and yet remaining "open and sensitive to the present." This was presented in a different context (related to courage) but resonated with me. Just thought I'd share that with you! Hope you are well! P.S. Its likely this blog entry may be my inspiration for my next post, hope you don't mind! :)

  3. Alisha... thanks for your wisdom and those words. I agree. And I agree with April too. It's been good to steep myself in the Word and to trust that God's guidance is sufficient for me... as is His grace. As for using my posts to inspire yours... yes, please do!!
